In a poignant display of solidarity with Palestine, activists in Fiji have recreated a Nativity scene just days before Christmas. This initiative, led by the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre (FWCC) alongside the Fijians for Palestine Solidarity Network, took place at the FWCC compound.
The recreated Nativity scene is inspired by the depiction from the Lutheran Church in Bethlehem, featuring a baby Jesus figure lying among rubble, covered with black and white checked fabric. Reverend Munther Isaac remarked, “If Christ were to be born today, he would be born under the rubble and Israeli shelling,” highlighting the harsh realities faced in Gaza and other areas of conflict.
The imagery of the scene aims to bring attention to the children born into these dire circumstances, emphasizing the ongoing crisis. The activists hope to raise awareness about the suffering of families in Palestine, particularly children impacted by violence, trauma, and loss.
This act of solidarity not only emphasizes compassion during a season traditionally focused on hope and new beginnings but also seeks to remind the world of those who continue to face hardships.
