In a poignant act of solidarity with Palestine, activists in Fiji have recreated the Nativity scene just days before Christmas. The initiative, led by the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre (FWCC) and the Fijians for Palestine Solidarity Network, took place at the FWCC compound. This powerful representation features a baby Jesus figure set against a backdrop of rubble, accompanied by a piece of black and white checked fabric draped over him, echoing a disturbing reality.

Reverend Munther Isaac, who has spoken on this topic, reflected on the imagery, stating, “If Christ were to be born today, he would be born under the rubble and Israeli shelling.” His words highlight the turmoil faced by Palestinians, particularly children, in recent times. The recreated Nativity scene serves as an emotional reminder of the suffering endured by families in Gaza, characterized by images of devastation and loss throughout the past year.

This recreated Nativity seeks to represent not just a religious symbol but also the harsh realities faced by children being born and raising their families in conflict zones. It underscores the ongoing plight of those living in Palestine, aiming to raise awareness and inspire compassion in others.

In a season traditionally associated with hope and renewal, this act of solidarity emphasizes the continued need for global attention and empathy towards those in distressing circumstances.

The creation of this Nativity scene invites reflection on shared humanity and the importance of supporting peace efforts in regions affected by conflict.
