Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism, Viliame Gavoka, has reassured that Fiji continues to be a safe destination for travelers, even as the Ministry of Health has declared a dengue fever outbreak in the Western Division. Gavoka emphasized that popular tourist areas, including Denarau Island and Coral Coast, have not been labeled as affected locations.
In light of the outbreak, the Ministry of Health and Medical Services is actively deploying its Dengue Action Plan, alongside dedicated response teams who are investigating reported cases. Gavoka advised tourists to adhere to standard health precautions during their visits, such as using mosquito repellent.
It is important to note that dengue fever is a common occurrence in tropical regions and poses a year-round risk in many destinations. Despite this challenge, Fiji has successfully managed dengue outbreaks in the past through coordinated public health actions. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) maintains a Level 1 travel notice for Fiji, advising visitors to take routine measures to avoid mosquito bites.
Governments from key source markets, including Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, support this guidance by encouraging their citizens to remain vigilant while traveling. Despite a recent uptick in dengue cases at the beginning of the year, Gavoka reassured that the risk to tourists and reported cases among them are minimal.
Resorts throughout Fiji are implementing preventive measures like spraying and fogging. Furthermore, the Ministry of Health is conducting mosquito eradication efforts in identified hotspots. Gavoka highlighted that local communities, in collaboration with the government, are mobilizing to remove mosquito breeding grounds as part of a broader public health initiative.
With these ongoing efforts, the Ministry for Tourism and Civil Aviation, along with health authorities and tourism partners, aims to prioritize the well-being of all visitors.
