Isikeli Basiyalo, an emerging talent in rugby, has been named to the extended squad of the Fiji 7s team, following an announcement by Head Coach Osea Kolinisau. This selection is a significant step in the young athlete’s career and illustrates Fiji’s dedication to developing promising players in the sport.

At just 21 years old, Basiyalo, who plays as a forward, received his call-up from the head coach of the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua, Glen Jackson. As the team gears up for the Hong Kong 7s scheduled for March 28-30, he joins other young players like Aisea Nawai and Apete Narogo in a squad that signifies a strategic blend of youth and energy.

Basiyalo expressed his excitement about this opportunity, stating, “When I was called, I didn’t believe it at first, but I was happy and keen. Playing 7s is a whole different challenge, and the speed of the game is much higher than what I’m used to.” This experience is seen by him as a valuable chance to enhance his skills, which he aims to bring back to his team, the Drua.

Coach Kolinisau remains hopeful about the potential of these new players but also cautions that a place in the final squad is not guaranteed. He underlined the requirement for these players to seamlessly integrate into the team dynamics and perform competitively in the lead-up to the tournament.

Basiyalo’s inclusion alongside other up-and-coming talents comes at a pivotal moment for Fiji, as the nation continues to build on its recent achievements in international rugby. Fans are eager to see how these players will handle the pressure and contribute to the team’s future successes.

This development is truly encouraging for both the athletes and their supporters, pointing towards a bright future for Fijian rugby. As players like Basiyalo, Nawai, and Narogo embark on this new journey, there is a palpable sense of optimism about their potential impact on the international sevens circuit.
