Fiji Airways Fiji Men’s 7s head coach Osea Kolinisau emphasizes the importance of grassroots tournaments in enhancing the national rugby program’s depth. Following the recent victory of the Fiji development side at the Fiji Sports Council Grassroots Vatulele 7s in Sigatoka, Kolinisau highlighted how these competitions serve as an essential platform for player development and internal competition.
Kolinisau views the grassroots events not as a downgrade, but as a vital opportunity for players to assess their skills against those who are already representing the national team. He stated, “For me, it’s best that these players compare their talent with those that are already in the national side.” This perspective underlines the value of local competitions in fostering healthy rivalries and player growth within the national framework.
With a limited number of tournaments outside the international circuit, Kolinisau believes that grassroots events are crucial for providing younger players in the extended squad with valuable game time. He explained, “It’s also an opportunity for our young players or development side to get game time as there are no other tournaments to keep them occupied with.” This approach not only helps to keep players engaged but also ensures they remain match-ready.
Additionally, Kolinisau noted that setting high expectations at the local level helps elevate standards across the board. By staying connected to grassroots rugby, the national team can ensure a smoother transition for players moving from local competitions to the international arena.
As the national 7s teams gear up for the upcoming Vancouver and New York 7s next month, the focus on grassroots development continues to be a cornerstone of Fiji rugby’s strategy, promising to nurture a new generation of talent for future competitions.
