The Fiji Bitter Marist 7s tournament is introducing an exciting change this year to better recognize women’s rugby. Organizers have opted to schedule the women’s final for Friday, allowing it the prominence it deserves, instead of relegating it to a less significant spot on Saturday. Tournament Director Koli Korovulavula emphasized the decision to give the women’s division a more prominent stage, suggesting that, historically, their finals have been treated as secondary.

In a nod to the growing stature of women’s rugby, Korovulavula highlighted the recent achievements of Fiji’s national women’s team, the Fijiana 7s, which reached the finals in the Vancouver 7s tournament. This year, the winners of the women’s competition will receive the same recognition as their male counterparts, complete with introductions to special guests, mirroring the ceremony seen at prestigious global events.

The tournament is scheduled to run from March 20-22, 2025, at the HFC Bank Stadium, featuring a competitive lineup with 93 teams, including 48 men’s teams and 9 women’s teams, along with youth divisions. This commitment to inclusivity and the overall promotion of women’s rugby has been a growing trend, as seen in recent celebrations of traditional rugby culture in Fiji.

Fans eager to witness the action can partake in a pay-per-view service offered through Viti+ for $69FJD for the entire three-day event or opt for grandstand package tickets priced at $22. The tournament not only aims to elevate the competitive spirit among participants but also seeks to strengthen communal bonds through the sport.

As the Fiji Bitter Marist 7s prepares to launch, it stands as a testament to rugby’s role in fostering community and talent development, especially among youth and women, ensuring a vibrant future for the sport in Fiji. The enhanced focus on women’s rugby is a promising sign of progress and reflects an encouraging shift towards greater equality in sports.
