Fiji Men’s 7s captain Jerry Tuwai highlighted that the standards exhibited by both the men’s and women’s teams at the 2024 Paris Olympics could inspire the nation and motivate the youth aspiring to represent Fiji. This statement was made during a welcoming ceremony on August 4, 2024, organized by the Fiji Rugby Union at the Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi, where family members and loved ones were present.
While he acknowledged that the results were not what many anticipated, Tuwai expressed confidence in the team’s ability to bounce back. He thanked God for guidance and protection during their preparation and after returning from Paris. He also extended gratitude to the coaches, management, and all those who rallied to represent the nation at the Olympics.
Tuwai offered an apology to the nation for returning with a less desired medal color, acknowledging the expectations placed upon them and their near miss at the final moment. He shared the challenges of being away from loved ones for a month.
Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, praised both the Fiji 7s and Fijiana 7s teams for their performances, recognizing the vital role played by the coaches and management in supporting the athletes through the tournament. He specifically acknowledged Mr. Osea Kolonisau for his continuous support.
Fiji Rugby Football Union Trust Board interim chairman Peter Mazey remarked that the gathering was a celebration of the remarkable achievements of both teams, which have brought great pride to Fiji. Mazey commended the teams for showcasing the spirit of Fijian rugby on the global stage, noting their resilience, skill, and determination against strong opponents.
He emphasized that their efforts inspired a new generation of athletes to dream of donning the iconic jersey. Mazey expressed immense pride in the team’s silver medal win, thanking the coaching staff, medical team, and everyone involved for their unwavering commitment and support.
He reminded the athletes that the silver medal represents countless hours of hard work and sacrifices, serving as a stepping stone for future achievements. He urged the teams to take time off to recharge with their families as they look forward to overcoming the challenges ahead.
