Fiji Men’s 7s captain Jerry Tuwai emphasized that the high standards demonstrated by both the men’s and women’s teams at the 2024 Paris Olympics could inspire the nation and young athletes aspiring to represent Fiji. Tuwai made these remarks during a welcoming event for the teams on August 4, 2024, organized by the Fiji Rugby Union at the Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi, attended by family and friends.
Acknowledging the disappointment over their performance, Tuwai expressed faith in the team’s potential to rebound. “First of all, I’d like to thank God for the protection and guidance during our preparations for the campaign in Paris, and for our safe return,” he stated. He expressed gratitude to coaches, management, and supporters for their unwavering commitment to the nation’s representation at the Olympic Games.
Tuwai further apologized to the nation for not meeting the expectations surrounding their medal performance, acknowledging the emotional toll of being away from loved ones for a month.
Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru praised both the Fiji 7s and Fijiana 7s teams for their efforts and thanked their coaches and management for providing essential support during the tournament. He highlighted the crucial role of leadership and expertise in the teams’ performances, particularly recognizing Osea Kolonisau and his family’s dedication to the athletes.
Peter Mazey, interim chairman of the Fiji Rugby Football Union Trust Board, remarked that the gathering celebrated the extraordinary achievements of both teams, which brought pride to Fiji. He applauded the athletes for their resilience and skill displayed in Paris against tough opponents, noting that their endeavors have inspired young athletes across the nation.
Mazey acknowledged their hard work, stating, “You have made history by winning the silver medal at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.” He extended appreciation to the coaching staff and medical team, emphasizing the collective effort behind the teams’ success.
He reminded everyone that the silver medal signifies more than just an accolade, representing countless hours of training and sacrifice. He encouraged continued support for the teams and expressed hope that this achievement would serve as a stepping stone toward future successes.
Mazey concluded by urging the athletes to take time off to be with their families and prepare for upcoming challenges, commending their representation of Fiji on the global stage.
