Fiji Men’s 7s captain Jerry Tuwai expressed that the high standard of competition showcased at the 2024 Paris Olympics could serve as motivation for both the nation and the youth aspiring to represent Fiji. This statement was made during a welcoming event for both the men’s and women’s teams on August 4, 2024, organized by the Fiji Rugby Union and held at the Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi, attended by family and supporters.
Tuwai acknowledged that while the team’s final outcome was not as anticipated, they possess the resilience to bounce back. He began by expressing gratitude to God for the guidance and protection received during their preparation for the campaign in Paris and for their safe return. He thanked the coaches, management, and all supporters for their unwavering commitment to represent the nation at the Olympic Games.
He apologized to the nation for not meeting expectations, acknowledging that falling short at the last moment was disappointing. Tuwai emphasized the difficulty of spending a month away from loved ones during the tournament.
Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru praised both the Fiji 7s and Fijiana 7s teams for their commendable performances, and expressed gratitude to the coaches for their dedication and support. He highlighted the significant role of the coaching staff, specifically mentioning Osea Kolonisau and his family’s contributions.
Peter Mazey, the interim chairman of the Fiji Rugby Football Union Trust Board, stated that the gathering was to celebrate the remarkable achievements of both teams, which brought immense pride to the nation. He commended the players for their determination and skill demonstrated throughout the tournament, emphasizing their role as an inspiration for the younger generation of athletes.
Mazey celebrated the Fiji Men’s 7s team for making history by winning the silver medal at the 2024 Olympics. He expressed appreciation for the coaching staff and medical team, acknowledging their crucial support in guiding the team to success.
He reminded everyone that the silver medal symbolizes the hard work and sacrifices made, as well as the team’s ability to compete against formidable opponents. He reinforced the idea that this achievement, though not gold, is significant and should motivate future endeavors.
In closing, he encouraged the team to take some time off to recharge and prepare for upcoming challenges while expressing pride in their contribution to Fiji’s legacy in rugby.
