The Fiji Airways men’s 7s rugby team is showing encouraging progress in the 2024-2025 HSBC SVNS Series, moving from a silver medal finish in the Olympic Games to clinching the title at the Dubai 7s and taking third place in Cape Town. This turnaround can be attributed to the leadership of head coach Osea Kolinisau, who has implemented a thorough fitness and defensive training regime since his appointment on March 8, 2024.

Over the past four months, the team has demonstrated significant improvement, with the resurgence of their renowned Fijian playing style becoming evident on the international stage. Notably, their recent success in Dubai marked a significant return to form for the team, ending a challenging 22-tournament winless streak.

Kolinisau expressed his pride in the team’s progression, stating that the players are beginning to grasp and adapt their defensive and attacking strategies. The victory in Dubai, where the team lifted the trophy, symbolized a hard-fought achievement for the players, who have faced considerable pressure and scrutiny during their drought.

Kolinisau’s first win as head coach not only boosted the team’s confidence but also reignited their passion for the game. He emphasized gratitude for the opportunity to witness his team’s growth and resilience, sharing that their smiling faces following the victory were incredibly rewarding.

Looking ahead, the team is gearing up for challenges in Perth this January and Vancouver in February, with hopes of continuing their momentum.

This unfolding journey of hard work, resilience, and newfound confidence showcases the spirit of Fiji rugby and promises an exciting future for the team as they strive for more success in the upcoming tournaments.
