Fiji 7s Team: Silver Medal Sparks Hope for Future Generations

Fiji Men’s 7s captain Jerry Tuwai expressed that the standard displayed by the teams at the 2024 Paris Olympics could inspire both the nation and youth who aspire to represent Fiji. This statement was made during a welcoming ceremony for the men’s and women’s teams, organized by the Fiji Rugby Union on August 4, 2024, at the Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi, attended by family and friends.

Tuwai acknowledged that, although the results were not what many expected, the team has the potential to bounce back. “First of all, I’d like to thank God for the protection and guidance during the past month in preparation for the campaign in Paris and for our safe return,” he said.

He expressed gratitude to the coaches, management, and everyone who supported them, including family members who stood by them during the Olympic journey. “We apologize if we came back with the wrong color medal; we understand the expectations but fell short at the last moment,” Tuwai added, referencing the team’s experience of being away from loved ones for a month.

Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru praised both the Fiji 7s and Fijiana 7s teams for their efforts and acknowledged the coaches and management for their unwavering support. He recognized the dedication of Mr. Osea Kolonisau and his family for their continuous backing of the team.

Peter Mazey, interim chairman of the Fiji Rugby Football Union Trust Board, stated that the gathering was to celebrate the remarkable accomplishments of both teams, which brought great pride to Fiji. He commended the teams for their tenacity in facing tough opponents and demonstrated the heart and skill that are hallmarks of Fijian rugby.

“You represented not just a nation, but inspired a generation of young athletes to dream of donning that iconic jersey,” Mazey said, highlighting that their silver medal achievement at the 2024 Olympic Games is a historic moment.

He extended gratitude to the coaching staff, medical team, and everyone involved, reinforcing that their collective effort was key to the teams’ success. Mazey encouraged the athletes to view the silver medal as a significant achievement, reflecting their hard work and sacrifices.

Looking ahead, he called for continued support to ensure that Fiji remains a rugby powerhouse, capable of inspiring not just the nation but the world. “Take some time to rest with your family and prepare for future challenges,” he advised the team.
