Fiji Men’s 7s captain Jerry Tuwai expressed that the high standards demonstrated by both the men’s and women’s teams at the 2024 Paris Olympics could motivate the nation and youth aspiring to represent Fiji. This statement was made during a welcoming event held on August 4, 2024, at the Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi, organized by the Fiji Rugby Union, attended by family and loved ones.
Tuwai acknowledged that although the results did not meet the public’s expectations, the team possesses the capability to rebound. He shared his gratitude, saying, “First of all, I’d like to thank God for the protection and the guidance during our month of preparation for the campaign in Paris and for our safe return.”
He extended thanks to the coaches, management, and supporters of the teams, stating, “Thank you very much to our families, all our mothers, fathers, wives, kids, girlfriends, and boyfriends, to everyone who supported us, Vinaka Vakalevu.”
He also expressed apologies for not bringing home the desired medal, explaining that the team fell short at a critical moment. Tuwai noted the difficulty of spending a month away from loved ones.
In recognition of the teams’ efforts, the Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, praised both the Fiji 7s and Fijiana 7s for their performances and thanked their coaches and management for their guidance throughout the tournament. He highlighted the importance of leadership and expertise in the teams’ achievements, acknowledging Mr. Osea Kolonisau and his family’s unwavering support.
Peter Mazey, interim chairman of the Fiji Rugby Football Union Trust Board, emphasized the purpose of the gathering was to celebrate the extraordinary accomplishments of both teams, which have instilled pride in the nation. He commended the teams for their resilience and skill, stating, “You showcased the heart and capacity that define Fijian rugby.”
Mazey recognized that the teams have not only represented Fiji internationally but also inspired the next generation of athletes. He said, “It is with amazing joy and admiration that I stand before you today and say thank you; you have made history by winning the silver medal at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.”
He concluded by thanking the coaching staff and medical team for their dedication, noting that their commitment was vital in leading the young athletes to success. While the teams may not have secured gold, the silver medal remains a significant achievement. Mazey encouraged continued support for the teams, stating that the silver medal should serve as a stepping stone for future successes. He added, “It’s time to take a break, spend time with your family, recharge, and prepare for the challenges ahead.”
