Fiji Men’s 7s captain Jerry Tuwai expressed that the high standard demonstrated by both the men’s and women’s teams at the 2024 Paris Olympics could serve as an inspiration for the nation and youth aspiring to represent Fiji. His remarks were made during a welcoming ceremony for the teams held on August 4, 2024, at the Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi, which was organized by the Fiji Rugby Union and attended by family and friends.

Tuwai acknowledged that while the team did not achieve the results many had hoped for, there is strong potential for them to recover. He started by thanking God for providing guidance and protection throughout the preparation period and their return from Paris. He expressed gratitude to the coaches, management, and supporters who stood by them during the Olympic journey.

Addressing the nation, Tuwai apologized for not winning the expected medal color, acknowledging that they fell short of expectations towards the end of their campaign. He also reflected on the challenges of spending a month away from family.

Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru praised both the Fiji 7s and Fijiana 7s teams for their performances and recognized the contributions of the coaching staff. He emphasized that their leadership was vital to the teams’ successes and specifically acknowledged Osea Kolonisau and his family for their support.

Peter Mazey, interim chairman of the Fiji Rugby Football Union Trust Board, stated that the gathering was to celebrate the remarkable achievements of both teams, which brought great pride to Fiji. He highlighted that the teams showed tremendous heart and resilience on the world stage, meeting formidable challenges with skill and determination.

Mazey remarked that the athletes not only represented Fiji effectively but also inspired a generation to aspire to wear the national jersey. He emphasized that winning the silver medal at the 2024 Olympics was a historic achievement, thanking everyone involved for their support and dedication.

He acknowledged that the work of the coaching staff, medical teams, and support personnel was crucial in leading the team’s success. As the athletes returned home, he reminded everyone that the silver medal symbolizes the extensive effort and sacrifices made during their journey, calling it a significant achievement despite not winning gold.

Mazey encouraged continued support for the teams and expressed hope that this silver medal would act as a stepping stone for future successes, enhancing Fiji’s reputation in rugby on a global scale. He concluded by highlighting the importance of taking a break to recharge before facing new challenges ahead.
