The recent Perth 7s tournament turned out to be a significant opportunity for the younger players of the Fiji 7s team, often seen as a blessing in disguise. Facing the challenge of injuries to senior players, including captain Jeremaia Matana, Sevuloni Mocenacagi, and Waisea Nacuqu, the team was compelled to rely on its less experienced members.

Head coach Osea Kolinisau expressed satisfaction with this situation, emphasizing the invaluable experience gained by these young athletes. While Fiji didn’t secure the desired outcome in Perth, the exposure and gameplay allowed the newcomers to showcase their capabilities. Kolinisau stated, “Experience is something you cannot buy; it’s something that you have to learn, and it stays with you.”

Among the promising talents, Rupeni Kabu stood out, showing he has what it takes to represent the team. Kolinisau praised him for earning significant playing time and demonstrating his potential, which is crucial as the team prepares for selections for the Vancouver 7s later next month.

With the senior players on the mend, they will return to compete for their positions, but the growth and depth added by the newer players could reshape the team’s future strategies. The experience gained in Perth may foster a stronger and more resilient squad moving forward, presenting a hopeful outlook for the team’s next challenges.
