Fiji Men’s 7s captain Jerry Tuwai highlighted that the level of performance exhibited by both the men’s and women’s teams during the 2024 Paris Olympics could serve as motivation for the nation and the youth aspiring to represent Fiji. His comments came during a welcoming ceremony organized by the Fiji Rugby Union on August 4, 2024, at Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi, where family and friends gathered to celebrate the teams.
Tuwai acknowledged that, despite not achieving the desired medal outcome, the team has the potential to bounce back. He expressed gratitude to God for providing guidance throughout the preparation and thanked coaches, management, and teammates for their commitment to the country during the Olympics.
He apologized for not bringing back the medal color that many expected and recognized the challenge of being away from loved ones for a month. Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru praised both the Fiji 7s and Fijiana 7s teams for their efforts and acknowledged the coaches and support staff for their guidance during the tournament. He gave special recognition to coach Osea Kolonisau and his family for their ongoing support.
Interim chairman of the Fiji Rugby Football Union Trust Board, Peter Mazey, noted that the ceremony aimed to honor the incredible achievements of both teams, which have instilled great pride in Fiji. He commended the players for their resilience, skill, and determination in facing tough competition. Mazey emphasized that their accomplishments have not only represented Fiji on a global stage but have also inspired young athletes.
He congratulated the teams for winning a silver medal at the 2024 Olympic Games, stating that their success is a reflection of the dedication and hard work they have invested. Mazey reminded attendees that the silver medal symbolizes countless hours of training and sacrifices made by the players. He emphasized that, while gold was not attained, their performance remains commendable.
As they prepare for future challenges, he encouraged continued support for the teams, emphasizing the importance of the silver medal as a stepping stone to even greater achievements in the sport. He concluded by thanking the players for their representation at the Olympics and urged them to take time for themselves and their families to recharge for what’s next.
