Fiji Men’s 7s captain Jerry Tuwai expressed that the performance level demonstrated by both the men’s and women’s teams during the 2024 Paris Olympics could serve as motivation for the nation and aspiring athletes. This remark came during a welcoming ceremony held for the teams on August 4, 2024, organized by the Fiji Rugby Union at the Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi, attended by family and friends.
Tuwai noted that although the outcome might not have met expectations, the team is capable of rebounding. He began by thanking God for the protection and guidance throughout their preparation for the Olympics and upon their return. He expressed gratitude towards the coaches, management, and supporters, acknowledging the challenge of representing their country at such a prestigious event.
“I apologize if we returned with a medal that wasn’t the color everyone hoped for,” Tuwai stated, addressing the nation’s expectations. He shared that being away from loved ones for a month was challenging.
Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, praised both the Fiji 7s and Fijiana 7s teams for their performances, commending the coaches and management for their guidance and support. He particularly recognized Mr. Osea Kolonisau and his family for their unwavering dedication to the teams.
Fiji Rugby Football Union Trust Board interim chairman Peter Mazey remarked that the gathering was an occasion to celebrate the significant achievements of both teams, which have brought immense pride to Fiji. He emphasized that their journey in Paris demonstrated the resilience, skill, and determination that characterize Fijian rugby. Each play showcased not just athletic ability, but the cultural strength and passion of the Fijian people.
Mazey thanked the teams for making history by winning a silver medal, acknowledging their hard work and inspiring future athletes to aspire to wear the national jersey. He expressed deep appreciation for the coaching staff and medical team, emphasizing the dedication required to guide the athletes to success.
As they welcomed the heroes back home, he reminded everyone that the silver medal symbolizes extensive preparation and sacrifice, even as they strive for gold in the future. He urged continued support for the teams, noting the importance of their achievements in cementing Fiji’s status as a rugby powerhouse that inspires not only the nation but the world.
“It’s time to take a break, enjoy family time, recharge, and prepare for future challenges,” he concluded.
