Fiji Men’s 7s captain Jerry Tuwai expressed that the performance shown by both the men’s and women’s teams at the 2024 Paris Olympics could inspire future generations and set a high standard for the nation. This statement was made during a welcoming ceremony for the teams on August 4, 2024, organized by the Fiji Rugby Union at the Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi, which was attended by family and supporters.

Tuwai acknowledged that while the team did not achieve the desired result, he remains confident in their ability to bounce back. He expressed gratitude to God for providing guidance and protection during the preparation and the journey back from Paris. He thanked the coaches, management, and teammates for their commitment to representing Fiji at the prestigious Olympic Games. Tuwai also extended his appreciation to family members, including mothers, fathers, partners, and children, for their support.

While addressing the crowd, he apologized for not bringing home the gold medal, acknowledging the high expectations placed on the team but emphasized their close efforts. He also reflected on the challenges of being away from loved ones for an extended period.

Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru commended both the Fiji 7s and Fijiana 7s teams for their performances and expressed gratitude to the coaching staff for their pivotal role throughout the tournament. He highlighted the contributions of Osea Kolonisau and his family for their dedication to the teams.

Peter Mazey, interim chairman of the Fiji Rugby Football Union Trust Board, stated that the gathering was meant to celebrate the teams’ remarkable achievements, which have brought immense pride to Fiji.

Mazey praised the teams for their resilience and skill displayed during the Olympics, emphasizing that they not only represented Fiji but also became a source of inspiration for young athletes dreaming of donning the national jersey. He noted the silver medal win at the Olympics as a historic achievement and thanked everyone involved for their unwavering support.

As the teams returned, Mazey acknowledged that the silver medal was a significant accomplishment despite not securing gold, representing the hard work and sacrifices made by the players. He encouraged continued support for the teams in the future, seeing the silver medal as a stepping stone toward even greater achievements in rugby.

In concluding remarks, he encouraged the players to take some time off to reconnect with their families and recharge before facing future challenges.
