Eight athletes from the Fiji 7s squad are set to represent the Mike Friday Select team at the upcoming McDonald’s Coral Coast 7s in Sigatoka. The tournament, scheduled to take place at Lawaqa Park from January 16 to 18, will provide these players a valuable opportunity to demonstrate their skills in front of selectors.
Coach Osea Kolinisau emphasized that this is an ideal chance for the eight players to shine while other members of the squad compete as part of the national team. They will be joined by renowned athletes, including double Olympic gold medalist Jerry Tuwai, South African player Rosko Specman, USA’s Matai Leuta, Welsh rugby legend Luke Treharne, Irish standout Harry McNulty, and promising French talent Alexandre Odinga.
Kolinisau noted that players who have recently participated in many games will be rested, allowing fresh faces to step onto the field and make an impression. He also provided reassurance that no serious injuries occurred during the Dubai and Cape Town 7s, although some players did experience minor issues during the Oceania 7s and will benefit from a two-week recovery period.
The Coral Coast 7s promises to be an exciting event, showcasing emerging talents alongside experienced stars, which bodes well for the future of rugby in Fiji.
This tournament is an inspiring platform not only for the players but also for fans and supporters, reinforcing the community spirit and passion for the sport in Fiji. By offering a stage for both seasoned professionals and up-and-coming athletes, the event celebrates the essence of rugby, fostering the growth of the game in the region.
