Eight athletes from the Fiji 7s rugby team are set to compete for the Mike Friday Select team in the upcoming 2025 McDonald’s Coral Coast 7s tournament in Sigatoka. Coach Osea Kolinisau highlighted that this event presents a valuable opportunity for these players to showcase their abilities to selectors while others from the squad will participate as part of the national team.
Among the notable names joining the Fiji players are double Olympic gold medalist Jerry Tuwai, South Africa’s Rosko Specman, USA’s Matai Leuta, Welsh legend Luke Treharne, Irish star Harry McNulty, and emerging French talent Alexandre Odinga. Kolinisau also indicated that players who have recently seen considerable game time will be rested to allow others to demonstrate their skills and potential.
The 2016 Olympic gold medal-winning captain assured that no injuries were reported following the Dubai and Cape Town Sevens competitions. However, some players incurred minor injuries during the Oceania 7s and are receiving a two-week break to recover.
The Coral Coast 7s tournament will take place from January 16 to 18 at Lawaqa Park, promising an exciting display of talent and competition.
This tournament could serve as a pivotal moment for younger and less experienced players, enabling them to gain crucial exposure and experience. The variety of talent participating also raises the stakes, ensuring a thrilling experience for rugby fans.
