Fiji Airways has announced the selection of Osea Kolinisau as the head coach for the men’s rugby sevens team, preparing for the HSBC Perth leg of the SVNS series. This decision follows the team’s impressive display at the McDonald’s Coral Coast 7s held at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka, where they clinched victory over the Mike Friday Boys’ Select 7s with a score of 29-14 in the cup final. Kolinisau expressed pride in his players’ performances, particularly highlighting the challenges they faced from strong local teams.

Lanky halfback Pilipo Bukayaro, who stood out in the final, was named the player of the match, showcasing the emerging talent within the squad. Kolinisau noted that the tournament provided valuable game time for many young players, essential for their growth and development in the sport. Unfortunately, injuries to key players Jerry Matana and Sevuloni Mocenacagi will keep them out of the upcoming Perth tournament.

Among the highlights from the Coral Coast 7s was the performance of rookie Sakiusa Siqila, who earned a place in the 13-man lineup for Perth. Iowane Teba was recognized as the player of the tournament for his consistent display throughout the event, demonstrating his potential to contribute significantly to the national team.

Kolinisau also mentioned his excitement for the inclusion of Seattle Barbarian winger Mosese Naura, noting his impressive speed and strength. The coach aims to develop a competitive squad capable of maintaining and enhancing Fiji’s position on the series points table, emphasizing the importance of effective communication, tactical execution, and resilience during matches.

The selected men’s squad for the Perth 7s includes:

1. Kavekini Tanivanuakula
2. Suliano Volivoli
3. Joseva Talacolo
4. Tira Wilagi
5. Rupeni Kabu
6. Pilipo Bukayaro
7. Terio Veilawa
8. Filipe Sauturaga
9. Iowane Teba
10. George Bose
11. Joji Nasova
12. Vuiviwa Naduvalo
13. Sakiusa Siqila

Meanwhile, Fijiana’s interim coach Timoci Volavola has also finalized his squad for the tournament, marking a significant moment for former Fijian Drua winger Adita Milinia as she makes her national debut.

As the Fiji 7s team gears up for this crucial competition, there remains a sense of optimism and excitement for their performances, with an encouraging structure focusing on developing young talent while addressing immediate competition needs. The upcoming Perth 7s tournament could be a pivotal platform for showcasing Fiji’s talented rugby players on an international stage.
