The Fiji 7s squad is facing a significant challenge as head coach Osea Kolinisau has made essential adjustments ahead of the HSBC SVNS World Championship in Los Angeles due to numerous injuries within the team. This week, Kolinisau has announced a restructured lineup that features three debutants: Iliavi Masori Nasova, Lasaro Bogisa, and Aisea Nawai.
The team has been impacted by the absence of key players, including Jeremaia Matana, Joseva Talacolo, George Bose, Vuiviwa Naduvalo, and Iowane Teba, all of whom have sustained injuries during preparations. Despite these setbacks, veteran player Sevuloni Mocenacagi will lead the squad, with additional support from Kavekini Tanivanuakula, Tira Wilagi, and Isikeli Basiyalo in the forwards. Furthermore, Terio Veilawa is making a return alongside Waisea Nacuqu, enhancing the team’s experience and capabilities.
The final squad also includes Filipe Sauturaga, Sakiusa Siqila, Joji Nasova, and Manueli Maisamoa. As the team departed for Los Angeles, there is a sense of anticipation and hope for a robust performance in the tournament scheduled for May 4th and 5th at the Dignity Health Sports Park.
The inclusion of fresh talent alongside seasoned players reflects a strategic approach to harness Fiji’s rich rugby heritage, allowing newer players to showcase their skills on an international stage. Fans remain optimistic that this blend will not only help the team cope with the current challenges but also pave the way for a successful campaign moving forward. This moment presents an opportunity for the debutants to shine and contribute to Fiji’s legacy in rugby sevens.
