Fiji 7s: Silver Medal Triumph Inspires Future Generations

Fiji Men’s 7s captain Jerry Tuwai emphasized the impact of the competition at the 2024 Paris Olympics on inspiring the youth and the nation during a welcoming ceremony for both the men’s and women’s teams on August 4, 2024. The Fiji Rugby Union organized the event at the Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi, attended by family and friends.

Tuwai acknowledged that although the results may not have met the expectations of many, the team has the potential to bounce back. He expressed gratitude, stating, “First of all, I’d like to thank God for the protection and guidance during our preparations in Paris and for returning safely.” He extended his appreciation to coaches, management, fellow team members, and families for their invaluable support.

He added, “We apologize if we came back with the wrong color medal. We understand the expectations and wish we could have done better, but we fell short at the last moment.” Tuwai reflected on the challenges of spending a month away from loved ones.

Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru commended both the Fiji 7s and Fijiana 7s teams for their performances and recognized the coaches and management for their support. He specifically thanked Osea Kolonisau and his family for their dedication.

Fiji Rugby Football Union Trust Board interim chairman Peter Mazey highlighted the gathering as a celebration of the extraordinary achievements of both teams, which brought pride to the nation. He praised the players for displaying the heart and strength of Fijian rugby against tough opponents and noted their ability to inspire young athletes to aspire to wear the national jersey.

Mazey lauded the team’s accomplishment of winning a silver medal at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, emphasizing that their journey displayed remarkable resilience and commitment. He thanked the coaching and medical staff for their unwavering support and acknowledged that the silver medal symbolizes numerous hours of practice and sacrifice.

While the teams did not secure gold, he reminded everyone that their achievement is still commendable. He encouraged ongoing support for the teams and expressed hope for future successes, stating, “Together, we can ensure that Fiji remains a powerhouse in rugby.”

In closing, he encouraged the athletes to take time off with their families to recharge before facing new challenges.
