Fiji Men’s 7s captain Jerry Tuwai expressed that the high standards set during the 2024 Paris Olympics could motivate the nation and inspire young athletes aspiring to represent Fiji. Tuwai made these remarks during a welcoming ceremony for both the men’s and women’s teams on August 4, 2024, organized by the Fiji Rugby Union at the Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi, attended by family and friends.
Tuwai acknowledged that although the results did not meet expectations, the team possesses the resilience to bounce back. He expressed gratitude for the guidance and protection received leading up to and returning from the Olympics. Tuwai thanked the coaches, management, and his teammates for stepping up to defend the nation at the prestigious Olympic Games. He also extended thanks to families, including mothers, fathers, and partners, for their unwavering support.
He apologized for not securing a medal that would satisfy the nation’s hopes, acknowledging the disappointment but emphasizing that the team fell short only at the last moment. Tuwai reflected on the challenges of being away from loved ones for a month.
The Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, commended the performances of both the Fiji 7s and Fijiana 7s teams, appreciating the support and guidance from the coaching staff throughout the tournament. He highlighted the impactful leadership of Osea Kolonisau and his family.
Fiji Rugby Football Union Trust Board interim chairman Peter Mazey stated that the gathering was meant to celebrate the extraordinary achievements of both teams, which brought immense pride to Fiji. He praised the teams for showcasing the heart of Fijian rugby, overcoming formidable opponents with resilience and skill. He noted that their performance not only represented the nation but also inspired a new generation of athletes.
Mazey expressed joy in honoring the team for winning a silver medal at the 2024 Olympics, acknowledging the countless hours of practice and sacrifices made. He emphasized that while they did not bring home gold, their achievement was still remarkable. Looking forward, he urged continued support for the teams, suggesting the medal serves as a stepping stone toward even greater accomplishments in Fiji rugby.
