Fiji 7s: Silver Linings and Future Dreams at the 2024 Olympics

Fiji Men’s 7s captain Jerry Tuwai emphasized the impact of the standard set during the 2024 Paris Olympics, noting that it could motivate the country and its youth aspiring to represent Fiji. Tuwai spoke at a welcoming ceremony for both the men’s and women’s teams, which took place on August 4, 2024, organized by the Fiji Rugby Union at the Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi, attended by family and loved ones.

While acknowledging that the results were not what many had anticipated, Tuwai expressed confidence in the team’s ability to rebound. He opened his speech by thanking God for guiding and protecting them during their preparation and journey from Paris. He expressed gratitude to the coaches, management, and their supporters, stating, “Thank you very much to our families, all our mothers, fathers, wives, kids, girlfriends, and boyfriends, to everyone who supported us.”

Tuwai apologized to the nation for not returning with the desired medal, explaining that they fell short at the last moment. He reflected on the difficulty of spending a month away from home, highlighting the emotional toll it took.

Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru praised both the Fiji 7s and Fijiana 7s teams for their performances, commending the coaches and support staff for their guidance throughout the tournament. He acknowledged the critical role of leadership and expertise in achieving success and recognized Mr. Osea Kolonisau and his family for their unwavering support.

Interim chairman of the Fiji Rugby Football Union Trust Board, Peter Mazey, remarked on the significance of gathering to honor both teams’ remarkable achievements that have brought immense pride to Fiji. He celebrated the players’ resilience and skill, noting, “Each try you scored, every tackle you made, it showed the strength of a culture and the passion of our people.”

Mazey expressed pride in the team for winning the silver medal at the 2024 Olympic Games, asserting that this accomplishment serves as an inspiration to young athletes dreaming of representing Fiji. He thanked the coaching staff, medical team, and everyone behind the scenes for their hard work and dedication, emphasizing that their support was crucial in guiding the team to success.

He encouraged the teams to view their silver medal as a stepping stone for greater achievements ahead, reinforcing Fiji’s legacy as a rugby powerhouse. As the heroes returned home, he urged them to take time to rest and recharge with their families before facing future challenges.
