Vilame Satala, the assistant coach for Fiji Airways Fiji 7s, will take the helm of the men’s team during the upcoming Oceania Sevens tournament in Honiara, Solomon Islands, set for December 7-8. The team has been diligently training for the past four weeks in preparation for this competitive event.
In an exciting development, Satala has named five debutants to the squad, including Lasaro Bogisa, Iosefo Namoce, and Alipate Nabiu. Notably, Namoce has been making waves in the Skipper Cup competition, where he plays as a center for Suva.
“The team consists of a blend of experienced players who have participated in the HSBC series and the Pacific Games, alongside emerging talent,” Satala noted. He emphasized the importance of seasoned players in a tournament of this magnitude, highlighting key athletes such as Kavekini Kabu, Timoci Na-kausa, and Manueli Maisamoa.
This year’s Oceania tournament marks a significant milestone as it will be the first time the Solomon Islands hosts this event. It is set to feature a total of 58 matches across two days, with 15 men’s teams and nine women’s teams participating. This year’s tournament also celebrates the debut of Niue and Kiribati in the women’s division, adding to the excitement and competitiveness of the event.
The blend of experienced and new talent suggests a bright future for Fiji 7s rugby, offering an opportunity for players to showcase their skills, gain valuable experience, and contribute to the growth of the sport in the region. The Oceania Sevens promises to be an exhilarating display of athleticism and teamwork, bringing together rugby enthusiasts from across the Pacific.
