Fiji’s men’s rugby sevens head coach Osea Kolinisau is poised to implement some changes to his squad ahead of the upcoming Perth 7s tournament in Australia. The anticipated adjustments come in light of injuries sustained by captain Jerry Matana and seasoned forward Sevuloni Mocenacagi, who were unable to play on the final day of the McDonald’s Coral Coast 7s tournament held in Sigatoka. Given their injuries, it’s likely that both players will sit out the Perth event to allow sufficient time for recovery.
Kolinisau noted, “Jerry Matana and Sevu were injured, and the young boys have stepped up,” suggesting that he has confidence in the younger players stepping in to fill the gaps left by the injured veterans. Potential replacements include the lanky Joseva Talacolo, Lasaro Bogisa, and the impressive Rupeni Kabu, who have shown promise in previous games.
Additionally, Mosese Naura, known for his speed showcased with the Seattle Barbarians, has also been integrated into the extended Fiji 7s squad.
This selection period promises to be competitive, with Kolinisau having previously emphasized the rigorous nature of the selection process. He has made it clear that no player’s position is guaranteed as he evaluates their performances during the Coral Coast 7s, which serves as a vital opportunity for players to prove their capabilities.
The Fiji squad will begin its journey in Pool MA, facing formidable opponents including New Zealand sevens and Tuva Rugby. The team has been focusing on improving critical aspects of their game, such as defensive strategies and effective communication, to ensure they are well-prepared for the challenges ahead.
Kolinisau’s proactive and strategic approach highlights his commitment to cultivating both immediate performance and the long-term development of his players, promising an exciting future for Fiji rugby as they prepare for international competition. The upcoming Perth 7s should serve as a significant platform for displaying their talent and competitiveness on the world stage.
