Fiji Airways’ Fiji 7s assistant coach Vilame Satala is set to lead the men’s team at the Oceania Sevens tournament taking place this weekend in Honiara, Solomon Islands. The squad has spent the last four weeks preparing for this significant event, and the anticipation is high as they aim to perform well.
Satala has made an exciting selection choice by including five players who will be making their debut in this competitive setting. Among them are Lasaro Bogisa, Iosefo Namoce, and Alipate Nabiu. Namoce, who has been showcasing his skills at the centre position for Suva in the Skipper Cup competition this year, is among the promising newcomers.
The coach highlighted the blend of experienced athletes and aspiring players within the team. He emphasized the importance of seasoned players to guide the team through the challenges of a significant tournament like the Oceania Sevens. Key figures such as Kavekini Kabu, Timoci Na-kausa, and Manueli Maisamoa are expected to take on leadership roles in the competition.
This year marks a special occasion as the Solomon Islands play host to the Oceania tournament for the first time, scheduled for December 7-8. The event will include 15 men’s teams and nine women’s teams, culminating in a total of 58 matches over the two-day period. Notably, the tournament also serves as a platform for emerging rugby nations, with Niue and Kiribati set to make their debut in the women’s division.
This tournament not only showcases the strength of rugby talent in the region but also fosters the growth of the sport by highlighting emerging teams. Fans and players alike can look forward to a weekend filled with thrilling matches and new beginnings in the world of rugby sevens.
