Sevuloni Mocenacagi remains the sole survivor from the Fiji 7s team that last celebrated victory at the Cape Town 7s tournament in 2018. During that memorable event, Mocenacagi contributed significantly by scoring a try in the final, leading Fiji to a 29-15 triumph over the USA and securing the title under then-coach Gareth Baber.
In contrast, Fiji’s current squad, featuring captain Jeremaia Matana alongside experienced players such as Pilipo Bukayaro, Terio Veilawa, Filipe Sauturaga, Vuiviwa Naduvalo, and Iokimi Vunaki, recently showcased their skills by winning bronze at last year’s tournament against Ireland, with a final score of 14-7, under the guidance of coach Ben Gollings.
Fiji 7s is now focused on building momentum after their victory at the Dubai 7s, seeking to achieve another strong finish in this weekend’s upcoming tournament.
This resilient team has shown their capability in past tournaments, and with the experience that Mocenacagi and the other players bring, there’s a sense of hope that they can continue on their winning ways and recapture the glory of previous years. The journey of the Fiji 7s team serves as a reminder of the highs and lows of competitive sports but also reflects the potential for renewed triumphs in the future.
