Fiji Airways men’s 7s rugby forward Sakiusa Siqila has expressed confidence as the team prepares for the HSBC Sevens World Championship in Los Angeles, scheduled for May 3-4. Following their recent victory at the Singapore 7s, where they beat Kenya in the final and secured a second-place finish overall in the series standings, Siqila highlighted the team’s strong focus and commitment.
During an interview after a training session at the University of the South Pacific, Siqila indicated that the atmosphere within the team is optimistic. “The preparation for LA sevens has been going well. The boys are fully focused and know what needs to be done in LA,” he stated. He emphasized the importance of building strong connections and communication among teammates, which were among the first topics discussed upon regrouping after their triumph in Singapore.
Siqila acknowledged areas needing improvement but remains assured that more game time and focused training will enhance their performance ahead of the tournament. The team is determined to rise above past criticisms, especially following their disappointing showing in Hong Kong earlier this season. “Yes, after the Hong Kong sevens, the boys saw the posts in the media about the loss,” Siqila recalled, stressing that their goals have remained steadfast throughout the season.
Fiji faces a daunting challenge in Pool B alongside Spain, Australia, and New Zealand, which Siqila recognized. “We know it’s a tough pool, but we are ready for the challenge. We can’t wait to go to LA and show what we’ve been preparing for,” he added. The upcoming championship at Dignity Health Sports Park represents not only an opportunity for competitive spirit but also serves as a platform for the Fijian team to showcase their commitment to pushing boundaries in international rugby.
The preparation and determination of the Fiji men’s 7s team reflect a broader narrative of resilience and a passion for the sport. As they look ahead to the championship, there is hope that their hard work will translate into memorable performances, inspiring both current fans and future generations of rugby players.
