The Fiji Airways Fijian 7s team has been eliminated from the Vancouver 7s tournament after a hard-fought 24-17 loss to Spain in the semifinal. Spain demonstrated strategic prowess, capitalizing on three restarts to secure 19 points through three tries.
During the first half, the Fijian side faced significant pressure, losing possession for nearly five minutes as Spain dictated the pace of the game. However, they managed to regain control just before halftime, scoring two successive tries from Nacani Boginisoko and captain Jerry Matana, narrowing the gap to 17-10 by the break.
Fiji’s determination was evident as they opened the second half with a try from Joseva Talacolo, following some impressive defensive efforts inside Spain’s half. Unfortunately, the momentum shifted dramatically when Matana was sent off with two minutes remaining for a foul on a player without the ball, leading to a penalty try for Spain.
This semifinal match marked a challenging yet spirited performance from Fiji, who will now focus on learning from this experience as they prepare for future competitions. Meanwhile, the final will feature Spain facing South Africa, promising an exciting matchup.
