Discipline has emerged as a significant challenge for the Fiji Airways Fiji Men’s 7s team in light of their recent performances during the initial rounds of the 2025/26 HSBC SVNS Series, according to international referee Rasta Rasivhenge. Rasivhenge acknowledges the youthful composition of Osea Kolinisau’s squad but stresses the importance of reducing costly mistakes, including instances of indiscipline, like the red cards observed during matches in Dubai.

Rasivhenge emphasizes the need for discipline not just in adhering to the game plan but also in its meticulous execution. He believes that as the players gain experience under Kolinisau’s guidance and compete at higher levels, they will learn to minimize errors and make better decisions on the field.

Despite the discipline issues observed, Rasivhenge is hopeful about the future, noting that exposure to elite competition can help bridge the gap between raw talent and high-pressure performance. He appreciates Kolinisau’s approach in incorporating young talents into the team, allowing them to learn vital structures and strategies essential for competing at top levels in World Rugby.

The referee’s observations particularly highlight the team’s disciplinary shortcomings, notably during the early stages of the HSBC SVNS Series, which included their encounters in Dubai and Cape Town. A key example of this was the red card issued to Ilikimi Vunaki, following a high tackle during Fiji’s cup semi-final match against New Zealand in Dubai, which ended in a narrow 21-24 loss for Fiji.

As Rasivhenge calls for a collective effort to improve the team’s discipline, he credits Kolinisau for fostering a depth of talent by integrating younger players, setting a strong foundation for the team’s growth and future successes. With continued guidance and resilience, the Fiji Men’s 7s team could potentially strengthen their gameplay and overcome these early setbacks.
