Fiji Airways men’s sevens rugby head coach Osea Kolinisau has placed a strong emphasis on the importance of player fitness in preparation for the upcoming Perth 7s tournament, taking place from January 24-26. In an interview, Kolinisau conveyed his admiration for the athletes’ response to intensive training and stressed that optimum fitness is crucial for players aiming to join the national squad.
As the team gears up for the competition, Kolinisau stated, “You have to be the fittest player if you want to play this sport. If you are a strong player, you have the dancing feet, but if you lack fitness, you will not be able to play to your full potential.” His focus highlights a commitment to ensuring that players are not only physically prepared but also mentally resilient and strategically sharp.
The tournament in Perth marks the second leg of the 2024/25 HSBC SVNS Series. Fiji’s campaign will kick off against Uruguay at 3:22 PM on the opening day of the event. Kolinisau has already been working on refining the team’s defensive strategies and has prioritized communication and decision-making on the field to boost performance.
With the added responsibility of averaging strong results from prior competitions, the Fiji men’s sevens team aims to build momentum from their strong start this season, currently leading the points table. They will face various contenders, including Kenya and New Zealand, in their quest for victory.
In addition, there has been a notable adjustment in the squad due to injuries, but Kolinisau remains optimistic about the performance of younger players stepping into these roles. He emphasized that the continuous improvement of both individual players and team dynamics is essential for long-term success.
As Rugby fans eagerly await the action on the field, the team’s determination and hard work serve as an inspiring reminder of the values of resilience and commitment in sports. With a structured training plan and a focus on fitness, the Fiji Airways men’s sevens team is geared up for a competitive outing in Perth, hopeful for strong performances that resonate beyond the tournament.
