Osea Kolinisau, head coach of Fiji Airways’ Fijian 7s team, has voiced his disappointment over the disqualification of the Viwa Rugby 7s team during the Fiji Bitter Nawaka 7s tournament. The tournament organizers took issue with the team’s lineup, which predominantly featured members from the national development squad.

Kolinisau aimed to provide young prospects and Fijian Drua players with vital on-field experience, including only two senior players recovering from injuries. He questioned the timing of the disqualification, pointing out that organizers should have acted before the team was officially submitted. “Why not disqualify us at the start? Why wait until after the team was submitted?” Kolinisau asked. He emphasized that grassroots tournaments should encourage inclusivity for national teams to effectively scout local talent, asserting, “If you want to be the best, you have to play against the best.” The disqualification also had a ripple effect, preventing players from rejoining their original clubs, which Kolinisau found particularly upsetting.

In response, tournament director Jeff Tamata defended the decision, stating that maintaining the integrity of grassroots rugby is essential. He emphasized the goal of nurturing local clubs, explaining that allowing a team filled with national players could lead to an unfair competitive edge. This disqualification aims to ensure fairness in Fijian rugby competitions.

Despite the disappointment, Kolinisau is focused on preparing his squad for the upcoming Hong Kong 7s tournament, showcasing his determination to cultivate emerging talent within Fijian rugby.

This situation underscores the importance of clear communication and adherence to tournament rules, which are vital to upholding the integrity of local rugby. By reinforcing fair play principles, grassroots events can continue to foster an environment where young athletes can thrive and develop their skills. This commitment to nurturing talent is crucial for the future of Fijian rugby.
