Fiji 7s chase consistency ahead of Cape Town Sevens

Fijiana 7s head coach Richard Walker has expressed the team’s intention to refine essential aspects of their performance as they gear up for the upcoming Cape Town Sevens this weekend. Following a commendable showing in Dubai, where Fiji secured a fourth-place finish, the team demonstrated potential but also highlighted areas in need of improvement.

Walker commented on their preparations, stating, “Last week, we worked on a couple of things from last season, which was starting our pool games quickly. Sometimes we start well in our first game, but then drop off in that second game, and we have to fight back in that third game.” This emphasis on maintaining consistency is vital, particularly in high-stakes matches.

He acknowledged the team’s ability to maintain momentum in their opening contests but admitted that mistakes made during their match against New Zealand were costly. “A couple of lapses in concentration for that third game against New Zealand… and as we know, New Zealand’s a class team, and they just executed on a couple of our mistakes,” he noted.

Despite these challenges, Fiji managed to advance to the semifinals, where they faced a tough defeat against Australia. Walker emphasized the importance of the team capitalizing on opportunities, stressing the need to be more clinical in critical moments.

As the Fijiana 7s prepare for their first match against the USA at 8:44 PM today, they will also compete against Great Britain at midnight and conclude their pool play against New Zealand at 3:48 AM tomorrow morning. Fans can catch all the action live on FBC Sports, fostering hope and excitement around Fiji’s performance in this prestigious tournament. This competition presents a chance for the Fijiana team to build on their previous experiences and showcase their resilience and skill on the world stage.
