Fiji Men’s 7s captain Jerry Tuwai expressed that the performance standards set during the 2024 Paris Olympics could inspire both the nation and young athletes aiming to represent Fiji in the future. His remarks came at a welcoming ceremony on August 4, 2024, organized by the Fiji Rugby Union at Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi, where family and friends gathered to celebrate the teams.
Tuwai acknowledged that although the outcome was not what many had anticipated, the team’s resilience gives them the potential to bounce back. He opened with gratitude, stating, “First of all, I’d like to thank God for the protection and guidance during our month-long preparation and for our safe return from Paris.” He expressed appreciation towards coaches, management, and family members for their unwavering support throughout their Olympic journey.
“We apologize if we didn’t bring home the medal everyone expected. We understand the high hopes placed upon us, but we fell short at the last minute,” Tuwai reflected, sharing the challenges of being away from family for an extended period.
Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru praised both the Fiji 7s and Fijiana 7s teams for their performances, thanking the coaches and management for their vital support and guidance during the tournament. He specifically acknowledged Osea Kolonisau and his family for their continued encouragement to the team.
The interim chairman of the Fiji Rugby Football Union Trust Board, Peter Mazey, stated that the gathering was to celebrate the remarkable achievements of both teams, which have brought great pride to the nation. Relaying a heartfelt message, Mazey noted, “From the moment you stepped onto the grand stage in Paris, we were all filled with pride from afar. You exhibited the heart and skill that defines Fijian rugby.”
He emphasized the inspiration the teams provided to young athletes dreaming of donning the national jersey and recognized their hard work and dedication as symbolic of the spirit of Fiji. “With immense joy, I thank you for making history by winning the silver medal at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris,” Mazey remarked.
He extended gratitude to coaches, medical teams, and everyone involved behind the scenes, acknowledging their critical role in guiding the young athletes. Mazey affirmed that while the teams may not have returned with gold, their achievement remains significant.
“As we look to the future, let this silver medal serve as a stepping stone for even greater accomplishments. Together, we can ensure Fiji continues to be a rugby powerhouse, inspiring our nation and the world,” he concluded.
Finally, he encouraged the players to take a well-deserved break to spend time with their families and prepare for the upcoming challenges.
