The Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre (FWCC) has achieved a noteworthy milestone this year, with 100 men from Rewa and Cakaudrove completing its Male Advocacy for Women’s Human Rights Program. This growing interest in training reflects a broader acceptance in Fiji that preventing violence against women and girls necessitates men challenging harmful gender norms and taking responsibility for their actions.

Implemented in 2002, this program is a Pacific-designed initiative based on feminist principles and accountability to women. It emphasizes consulting women in local communities to ensure their voices are integral to the process, serving as a foundation for subsequent training for men.

During the week-long program, participants delved into the root causes of violence, concepts of power and control, patriarchy, socialization, and the damaging myths surrounding rape and victim-blaming. They also discussed respect, equality, and shared responsibility. Assessments from the latest training indicate promising behavioral changes among the participants.

Many women in various villages have noted that their partners are sharing household responsibilities, improving communication, and becoming more cognizant of the challenges women face. Some men have begun to confront sexist jokes and detrimental peer behavior, while others are making visible changes within their homes. One participant from Rewa has even started accompanying his wife on fishing trips and preparing meals for her when she returns.

FWCC Coordinator Shamima Ali highlighted that these developments exemplify the program’s essence. She stated, “We are seeing men reflect deeply on their roles and take genuine steps to change their behavior. Prevention is possible when men listen to women, respect women’s rights, and commit to building homes and communities grounded in equality and non-violence.”

The program has also tackled issues surrounding mental health, acknowledging that harmful notions of masculinity often hinder men from expressing vulnerability. FWCC calls on government agencies, community leaders, and partners to support evidence-based male-engagement initiatives and encourages men across Fiji to play active roles in promoting equality and respectful behavior.

This initiative not only marks progress in gender equality but also fosters a community where healthy relationships can flourish, setting a positive example for future generations.
