The chief of Bua province, Ratu Makutu Nagagavoka, has indicated that many drug-related cases in the area may go unreported due to residents’ fears of violence and harassment. He pointed out that these concerns have fostered an environment where drug abuse and trafficking can continue without scrutiny.
Ratu Makutu emphasized that the fear for personal safety deters individuals from contacting law enforcement. “People are afraid to call the police because they know that drug dealers and users might retaliate,” he stated.
He highlighted the necessity for the Fiji Police Force to engage with local communities to raise awareness about reporting drug-related incidents. He suggested that police should inform villagers that their reports can remain anonymous and outline other available options for reporting.
According to Ratu Makutu, collaboration between the communities and the Fiji Police Force is essential to tackle the issue of drugs effectively.
