“Fighting the Drug Crisis: A Call to Protect Our Youth”

Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Professor Biman Prasad, has underscored the serious consequences of drug abuse on individuals, communities, and families. Speaking to students at Lomary Secondary School, he highlighted the long-term effects that drug usage can have on personal health and societal well-being. Professor Prasad warned that reliance on drugs can destroy not only individual lives but also disrupt family structures, lead to crime, and affect community stability.

He stated, “Drugs destroy you. They destroy your families, your parents, and your communities. Please, stay away from anything that leads to crime.” This urgent message was part of a broader call for enhanced preventive measures and support systems to combat the rising issue of drug abuse, particularly among the youth.

Professor Prasad’s remarks echo previous statements he made at the Gold N Water Carnival 2024, where he described drug abuse as a critical national crisis that could devastate society if left unaddressed. He emphasized that both government initiatives and community involvement are crucial in the fight against drug use, urging everyone to actively reject drugs and support initiatives aimed at creating safer environments for students.

Additionally, the Minister pointed out that ongoing efforts include a national drug and narcotic strategy that focuses on empowering law enforcement and establishing community support frameworks. Through these measures, the government aims to foster a healthier, safer society where young people can thrive free from the influences of drugs and associated criminal activities.

The emphasis on education and communal responsibility in addressing drug abuse carries a hopeful promise. By encouraging open dialogue and awareness, the community can collectively work towards a brighter future, devoid of the shadows cast by substance misuse.
