The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) is intensifying its efforts to tackle corruption through enhanced public education and awareness initiatives. FICAC Commissioner Barbara Malimali emphasized the importance of empowering citizens to identify and report corrupt practices, thereby nurturing a culture of integrity and accountability within the community.
In her remarks, Malimali highlighted the collaborative approach FICAC has developed with government agencies, civil society organizations, and international partners, aimed at strengthening their collective fight against corruption. She addressed the criticisms faced by FICAC in the previous year, noting the toll it took on staff morale as they were subjected to social media bullying. Nevertheless, she affirmed the commitment of the commission to uphold its mandate despite these challenges, stating, “We have remained steadfast, our compass fixed on the true cause of our mandate.”
Malimali reiterated FICAC’s ongoing dedication to eradicating corruption and championing the principles of ethical governance, transparency, and accountability. The commission continues to deploy dedicated officers to investigate and prosecute individuals involved in corrupt activities, sending a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated.
Looking toward 2025, FICAC remains determined to lead Fiji towards a corruption-free future. The commission plans to invest further in its workforce, harness technology, and refine strategies to effectively manage emerging challenges. Malimali urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, reinforcing the need for community involvement.
She concluded with a message of gratitude toward the Fijian people for their continued support, expressing optimism that, together, a brighter future characterized by good governance and free from corruption can be achieved.
This commitment from FICAC fosters hope for a transparent and accountable governance structure in Fiji, ultimately benefitting all citizens. By encouraging citizen participation and bolstering partnerships, Fiji is taking significant steps towards a corruption-free society.
