Technology-facilitated gender-based violence (TFGBV) is an emerging concern in our increasingly digital society, with implications that are becoming more evident. Online platforms designed for connection and community are unfortunately turning hostile, often subjecting women and girls to unwanted attention, threats, and derogatory comments.
Fiji’s Minister for Women, Lynda Tabuya, has voiced her worries about this trend and is working to strengthen the capabilities of Fiji’s online regulatory bodies, which she describes as currently inadequate. Partnering with organizations like the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Ms. Tabuya is committed to addressing TFGBV, recognizing its detrimental impact on the mental and physical well-being of women. She highlighted that online harassment can lead to significant health issues, ultimately affecting women’s productivity.
In recognition of the ongoing struggle against TFGBV, Ms. Tabuya plans to host a young women’s forum next month as part of the 16 Days of Activism campaign. This forum aims to empower young women to discuss and formulate strategies to combat TFGBV.
Additionally, UNFPA has conducted a gender analysis of the Online Safety Act to evaluate its effectiveness and identify potential weaknesses. Tabuya noted that women are disproportionately affected by online abuse, facing attacks ten times more than men. With her own experiences of harassment, she emphasizes the urgency of this issue, calling for robust laws to protect women and enhance collaboration among law enforcement, judicial systems, and relevant stakeholders.
She underscored the necessity to hold internet service and telecommunications providers accountable for ensuring public safety over individual privacy when it comes to protecting women and girls online.
