Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is increasingly recognized as a significant threat to global health, and efforts to combat this issue are being reinforced in various countries. This week marks World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week, which commenced on November 18 and will continue until November 24. In Fiji, the National Antimicrobial Resistance Committee has been organizing this event since 2015 to heighten awareness about the dangers of AMR.

Dr. Luisa Cikamatana, the Chief Medical Advisor of the Health Ministry, officially launched AMR Week in Labasa. During her announcement, she emphasized that AMR jeopardizes the advancements of modern medicine and poses a real danger to lives today. Dr. Cikamatana pointed out Fiji’s proactive stance on this issue through the National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance, which is currently in its second edition. This plan sets forth critical objectives and fosters collaboration among various health sectors.

In her address, Dr. Cikamatana encouraged the public to heed the advice of healthcare professionals regarding antibiotic usage. She advised against sharing prescriptions and emphasized that antibiotics should never be requested without a legitimate medical reason. For a successful battle against AMR, she called on all sectors, including human, animal, and environmental health, to work together in protecting both local and global health.

Education, advocacy, and proactive measures are essential for Fiji to foster a healthier future. By enhancing public awareness and promoting responsible practices, the country can effectively contribute to the global fight against antimicrobial resistance.

This initiative not only underscores the urgency of addressing AMR but also serves as a reminder of the lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic about the necessity of hygiene, vaccination, and collective responsibility in maintaining public health. The commitment demonstrated by Fiji’s healthcare leaders is a hopeful sign that more comprehensive strategies can lead to positive changes in managing this pressing health threat.
