FICAC’s New Commissioner: A Game-Changer in Corruption Fight?

A new Commissioner for the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption is set to assume office this afternoon. This information was confirmed to Fiji One News by Acting Deputy Commissioner Francis Puleiwai. Puleiwai noted that while she has been informed about the transition, the specifics regarding the new Commissioner’s identity and responsibilities have not yet been made public.

According to section 5(1) of the FICAC Act 2007, the Commissioner is appointed by the President based on the recommendation of the Judicial Services Commission, which must also consult with the Attorney-General.

In related news, FICAC has confirmed that a raid was conducted at the Election Commission yesterday, during which documents related to an investigation into Chairperson Barbara Malimali were seized. Malimali is currently facing allegations of abuse of office.
