FICAC’s Investigation into Commissioner Sparks Controversy

The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has submitted a case against its Commissioner, Barbara Malimali, to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP) for further examination. This referral is in connection with allegations of Abuse of Office during Malimali’s time as the Electoral Chair at the Electoral Commission of Fiji.

Additionally, FICAC has confirmed the closure of five cases that were previously referred by the Supervisor of Elections earlier this year, with the Supervisor being informed on July 24.

The first case pertains to alleged corrupt practices regarding false declarations made by the FijiFirst Party, specifically involving the Fiji First Australia Association Incorporated, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, and Tito Bainimarama.

The second case involves accusations against Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum and Mohammed Saneem for collusion and conflicts of interest, as well as Arif Ali, who allegedly made a $10,000 donation to the FijiFirst Party while serving as a civil servant.

The third case includes complaints against the President of Fiji, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, and Charan Jeath Singh.

Another case points to Voreqe Bainimarama, who is accused of submitting false declarations of Income, Assets, and Liabilities for the years 2014 to 2019 and 2022.

The fifth case involves Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum concerning his failure to declare an overseas travel allowance.

FICAC has indicated that investigations related to other matters referred by the Supervisor of Elections are still ongoing, and the Commission will refrain from making further comments until these investigations are complete.

In its statement, FICAC emphasized that it continues to operate normally and that all its processes and procedures remain unchanged. The Commission is committed to addressing every complaint with the necessary scrutiny, irrespective of the individuals involved.
