The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has reiterated its commitment to operational independence, emphasizing that it functions without outside interference. Commissioner Barbara Malimali has guaranteed the public that under her guidance, the institution operates autonomously.
While Ms. Malimali noted that she cannot speak for previous administrations, she firmly stated, “As the current commissioner, I can assure the people of Fiji that there is absolutely no interference from the Government in our operations.” She emphasized that any claims of outside pressure from government entities are unfounded, asserting that FICAC is accountable to the people through Parliament rather than individual government members.
Recognizing the capabilities and commitment of her team, Ms. Malimali remarked, “FICAC has an excellent team of well-trained professionals who know their jobs.” She expressed hope for the institution’s future and outlined efforts to improve transparency and communication.
Under her leadership, FICAC is enhancing its openness with the public by providing monthly updates on ongoing cases and maintaining active social media accounts. Ms. Malimali believes these changes demonstrate the organization’s commitment to transparency, stating, “I believe you’ll agree that we’re now more forthcoming with information.”
This initiative signals a positive direction for FICAC, fostering trust and accountability within the community it serves. By committing to transparency, FICAC is not only strengthening its operations but also working to build a stronger relationship with the public, reflecting a hopeful outlook for combating corruption in Fiji.
