The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has emphasized its commitment to operational independence, asserting that it functions without any outside interference. FICAC Commissioner Barbara Malimali has confidently reassured the public that the organization operates autonomously under her guidance.

“I cannot comment on the previous administration or management of FICAC, as I was not part of it,” Ms. Malimali stated. “However, as the current commissioner, I assure the citizens of Fiji that there is absolutely no governmental interference in our operations. We are entirely independent.”

She firmly clarified that there is no undue pressure from any government entities or individuals. Ms. Malimali articulated that her accountability lies with the people of Fiji through Parliament, reinforcing that it is the citizens who can hold FICAC responsible should they perceive shortcomings in the agency’s performance, rather than individual government members.

Acknowledging the expertise and commitment of the FICAC team, she praised their professionalism. “FICAC has an excellent team of well-trained professionals who understand their responsibilities. The only change has been in leadership,” she noted.

The Commissioner expressed optimism regarding the future direction of the institution, highlighting ongoing efforts to improve transparency and communication. “FICAC is evolving and becoming stronger, but we always recognize the potential for further improvement. We are now more open with our updates, holding regular monthly media briefings on cases that we are either opening, closing, or pursuing,” she explained.

She also mentioned that the agency’s social media platforms reflect this increased transparency, and promised that disclosing annual reports will further bolster accountability.

This commitment to independence and transparency from FICAC is a positive development for the democratic processes in Fiji, as it reinforces public trust in institutions designed to uphold integrity and combat corruption. As communication improves, the people of Fiji can look forward to a more engaged and informed relationship with their anti-corruption agency, fostering a society that values accountability.

In summary, FICAC’s leadership is determined to operate independently and enhance its communication with the public, signaling a hopeful future for transparency in governance.
