Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has indicated that Francis Pulewai is not likely to return to her previous position as acting Deputy Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) in the near future. Rabuka expressed that Pulewai’s behavior and statements following the recent Commission of Inquiry (COI) into FICAC have raised significant concerns about her suitability for the role.

Pulewai had formally sought reinstatement to her former position along with compensation for the time spent away from FICAC. However, Rabuka pointed out that her recent comments and actions have cast doubts in light of the inquiry’s findings.

Pulewai’s previous tenure was impacted by the controversial appointment of the current FICAC Commissioner, Barbara Malimali, whose suspension followed allegations of misconduct. Amid the ongoing turmoil, Pulewai previously expressed her eagerness to return and help restore integrity to the agency. Given the current dynamics, Rabuka has yet to present her with any formal options regarding her reinstatement.

This situation mirrors the broader challenges faced by FICAC, especially in reinforcing accountability within governmental operations. Pulswai’s willingness to re-engage with FICAC could potentially lead to a new chapter for the agency, signaling hope for reforms that enhance public trust in Fiji’s governance.

While uncertainties remain surrounding Pulewai’s future with FICAC, this moment presents an opportunity for reform and improvement within the anti-corruption framework in Fiji.
