The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has reaffirmed its strategic initiatives aimed at combating corruption, with an enhanced focus on public education and awareness campaigns. Commissioner Barbara Malimali emphasized the importance of empowering citizens to identify and report corrupt practices, which is crucial for nurturing a culture of integrity and accountability.

In her statements, Malimali highlighted the strengthened partnerships FICAC has formed with government agencies, civil society organizations, and international allies, enhancing collaborative efforts in the anti-corruption battle. Despite facing substantial criticism last year that led to skepticism regarding their processes and subjected their dedicated staff to social media harassment, FICAC remains steadfast in its mission.

Malimali stated, “Our compass is fixed on the true cause of our mandate,” reflecting the organization’s commitment to overcoming challenges. She reiterated their focus on the principles of ethical governance, transparency, and accountability as they work tirelessly to investigate, prosecute, and convict individuals engaged in corrupt activities, sending a strong message that corruption will not be tolerated.

Looking ahead to 2025, FICAC is determined to create a corruption-free Fiji through investments in workforce development, technology, and strategic refinements to address emerging challenges effectively. Malimali called on citizens to stay vigilant and report suspicious activities, expressing gratitude for the trust and support from the Fijian people, and highlighting the collective effort required to build a brighter, corruption-free future characterized by good governance.

This proactive approach by FICAC is not only commendable but also crucial for cultivating a society where accountability and integrity thrive. As citizens become more aware and involved in the fight against corruption, the possibilities for a transparent and ethical future become increasingly attainable.
