The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has reiterated its commitment to operational independence, emphasizing that it operates without external interference. Commissioner Barbara Malimali assured the public that under her leadership, FICAC functions autonomously.
“I cannot speak for the previous administration or management of FICAC as I was not part of it,” Ms. Malimali stated. “However, as the current commissioner, I assure the people of Fiji that there is absolutely no interference from the Government in our operations. We are completely independent.”
She expressed that there is no undue pressure from any government entities or individuals. “Any suggestion of pressure being applied from various government sectors is simply untrue. My accountability lies with the people of Fiji through Parliament, not with individual government members,” she added.
Ms. Malimali praised the team’s competence and dedication, highlighting their professionalism and commitment to their roles. “FICAC has a well-trained team that excels in their responsibilities. The only change has been in leadership,” she noted.
Looking ahead, she is optimistic about the institution’s future and is focused on enhancing transparency and communication. “FICAC is evolving and becoming stronger, while still recognizing that there is room for improvement. We are now more proactive in our updates, providing regular monthly media briefings on the cases we are working on,” she explained.
Furthermore, she mentioned the importance of social media in conveying transparency, stating that FICAC is becoming more forthcoming with information. “The publication of annual reports will also contribute to this transparency,” she concluded.
In summary, the FICAC stands firm in its independence and aims to build trust with the public through improved communication and transparency. This is a hopeful message for the people of Fiji, as it indicates a commitment to accountability and integrity within the institution. As FICAC enhances its efforts to inform and engage with the public, it fosters a more transparent and trusting relationship, which is vital for the fight against corruption.
