The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has reiterated its commitment to operational independence, emphasizing that it functions without any external influences. Commissioner Barbara Malimali has reassured the public that under her leadership, FICAC remains autonomous.

“I cannot speak on behalf of the previous administration but as the current commissioner, I guarantee there is no interference from the Government in our operations,” Malimali stated. She clarified that any claims regarding undue pressure from government entities are unfounded. “I am accountable to the people of Fiji through Parliament, not individual government members,” she added.

Malimali praised the dedication and skill of FICAC’s team, highlighting the competence of the professionals within the organization. “The only change has been in leadership,” she mentioned, expressing confidence in the team’s ability to fulfill their responsibilities effectively.

Looking ahead, Malimali expressed optimism about FICAC’s potential for growth, citing ongoing efforts to improve transparency and communication. She noted that FICAC is becoming more robust and has made strides in providing timely updates to the public. Regular monthly media briefings and active social media engagement represent the organization’s commitment to openness. Furthermore, annual reports are expected to enhance this transparency even further.

This affirmation by FICAC underscores the importance of an independent anti-corruption body in ensuring accountability and integrity within the government. The proactive approach taken by FICAC to enhance transparency is a promising sign for the future, indicating a commitment to earn public trust and cooperate effectively with citizens.
