The Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), Barbara Malimali, has announced that the investigations into allegations of abuse of office involving Members of Parliament have been concluded, although some cases are still being reviewed. During an interview, Malimali specified that various complaints against public officials were submitted to FICAC before her appointment.
“I cannot provide the exact number of files closed before I assumed this role,” she stated. “However, I can confirm that there are ongoing investigations within our department.”
She detailed the investigative procedure at FICAC, indicating that her responsibilities begin with authorizing the initiation of investigations and end with making final decisions after the legal team has assessed the findings. The current open cases are still with the investigators and have not yet returned to her for final review.
Malimali reassured the public about FICAC’s dedication to resolving all complaints concerning abuse of office and corruption with fairness and thoroughness.
This commitment to addressing corruption is vital in restoring public trust in government institutions, promoting accountability, and ensuring a transparent political environment in Fiji. The completion of investigations highlights FICAC’s ongoing efforts to uphold integrity within public offices. As investigations continue, there is hope for a cleaner political landscape in the country.
